One of the photographs from Joseph McKenzies studies on Gorbals life in Glasgow 1964. The pictures were stalked and captured among the dusty back streets and middens (got to love that old Glaswegian word), and evoke some of the most evocative images of children at play from that era.
It’s inspired a forthcoming series of drawings.
1950’s physical education. There’s not a single obese kid amongst them. The image reminds me of Jake and Dino’s Champman and their images of foul play. Yet there’s a child like innocence, playful, wholesome feeling about the image. Note to kids of the 21st century; get off your PS3 and into the playground!
